Home Automation: Cool and Cost Effective 05/23/2009

Home automation can simplify household processes and make your home more secure, and they are just cool. However, home automation systems can also save you money in the long run.

As mentioned in our last blog post, the ABI report, Home Automation System Shipments to Approach 2.8 Million in 2011, forecasts that the home automation market is going to expand rapidly starting in 2010. This growth will likely begin when consumers start to realize the efficiencies and cost savings that home automation systems can offer. It is estimated that just monitoring one’s energy usage can result in cost savings of 15% to 20%.

Pricing for home automation components are also falling fast with the introduction of new standards-based wireless technologies, such as ZigBee and Z-Wave, which are the communications links between security alarm panels and central home monitoring stations.

Home automation is also intersecting with green energy home solutions. Consumers are seeking greener energy solutions, installing wind, solar, and geothermal systems, which will be powered and controlled by new home automation systems. And, the Obama administration has extended the 30% federal tax break on these systems through 2016.
